Scenery Is Best On Back Roads From National Safety Council. To drive from one place to another rapidly and with a minimum of bother there i s nothing like the new interstate system of superhighways. But if you want a leisurely trip with frequent halts for ex ploration photography or just plain loafing keep away from the turnpikes says the National Safety Council. They may oc casionally pass through some nice country but when you are cruising along one there is no time for enjoying the view.

The striking scenery the more photogenic views and certainly the best loafing sites are often found on the back roads those indicated by the thinnest lines on the road map or missing entirely from it. Such roads should not be com pletely ignored by those seek ing the different or unusual away from the crowds of other tourists Often local advice must b e sought as to which back roads and remote areas are of inter est to a stranger. But don't de pend on only one source un less that source is known and highly trusted Advice is free and almost ev eryone likes to give it. Not al ways is it.

OCR may contain errors typical of early 20th-century print scans. Punctuation and paragraph breaks have been reconstructed for readability.
